Gubi Bagdad Portable Table Lamp
Gubi Bagdad Portable Table Lamp
Made to Order - 4-6 Weeks
Designed by Mathieu Matégot
Manufactured by Gubi
The Bagdad Portable Lamp, launched in 2024, is a scaled-down version of Mathieu Matégot's original 1954 design. The light draws inspiration from Middle Eastern lanterns. It features a cubist construction made with Matégot's signature ‘rigitulle’ technique, whereby sheet metal is folded and perforated to create a lace-like effect.
Measuring half the size of the original, decorative features have been adapted to become functional parts of the light in the smaller version; the 'tail' doubles as a handle for ease of movement and the brass ball at the top of the lamp now functions as a touch-activated dimmer mechanism.
Available in Black, White, and International Orange, the portable lamp offers up to 50 hours of light at 10% intensity. The UV-resistant powder coating ensures it’s suitable for outdoor use, provided it remains dry.

The angles and openings in the transparent metal shade mean that the Bagdad Portable Lamp casts and attractive, ambient play of light that creates visual interest in whatever indoor and outdoor space it is placed in, and results in an atmospheric shadow effect even when switched off.
The small brass ball at the top of the lamp was solely decorative in Matégot’s design, but now functions as a touch-activated dimmer mechanism in the portable edition. The lamp can be charged to full capacity in three hours, providing eight hours of light at full intensity, 15 hours at half, and 50 hours at 10% – enough to last throughout the longest of evenings outdoors.
