Originally designed for the University of Jyväskylä in Finland in 1953, the Beehive is one of Alvar Aalto’s most popular lighting designs. Inspired by the beautifully layered structure of a bee’s nest, the sculptural, organic form of the light creates a defining hanging pendant. The elegantly curved tiers are separated by perforated metal rings, allowing for a golden-toned illumination to be created. Light is directed in a masterly way only where needed, creating a soft, pleasant twilight. Suitable for both in the home and public spaces, the Beehive can be employed individually or in a bold cluster; creating a striking effect even when unlit.
