Designer of the Month – Florence Knoll

Florence Knoll
Designer of the Month

“I needed a piece of furniture, it was not there, so I designed it. ”
-Florence Knoll

florence knoll

Born in Saginaw, Michigan in 1917, Knoll, then Florence Schust, demonstrated an interest and aptitude for architecture from an early age. After she was orphaned at age 12 under tragic circumstances, Knoll was enrolled to Kingswood School, a fated decision, since the site of Kingswood stood adjacent to the prestigious Cranbrook Academy of Art.

While at Kingswood, Florence befriended Eilel Saarinen, whom she would later study under at Cranbrook. Warmly embraced by the Saarinen family, Florence vacationed with them in Finland, enjoyed the company of their accomplished friends, and formed a very close relationship with Eliel’s son, Eero. The connections she made and the skills she developed while at Cranbrook were the foundations of Florence Schust’s incredible design education and pioneering career. With recommendations from Eliel Saarinen and Alvar Aalto, Florence went on to study under some of the greatest 20th century architects, including Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe at the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Interior Architecture and Design

In 1941 Florence moved to New York where she met Hans Knoll who was establishing his furniture company. With Florence’s design skills and Hans’ business acumen and salesmanship, the pair, who married in 1946, grew the nascent company into an international arbiter of style and design. Florence also seeded contributions with her friends Eero Saarinen, Harry Bertoia, and Mies van der Rohe.

Florence frequently contributed furniture designs to the Knoll catalogue. She humbly referred to her furniture designs as the “meat and potatoes,” filler among the standout pieces of Bertoia, Mies, and Saarinen. However, with her attention to detail, eye for proportion, and command of the modern aesthetic, many of her designs have become as revered and celebrated as those of her colleagues.

Illuminate your space.

Home offices are usually the smallest room in the house, lacking large windows to let the sun stream in, so they tend not to get an abundance of natural light. Instead, use a task light when you’re working to ensure you don’t strain your eyes.

Jean Prouve

Designer of the Month – Jean Prouvé

By | In the news | No Comments

Jean Prouvé

Designer of the month

I’m not an architect; I’m not an engineer – I’m a factory man.’

Jean Prouvé

Jean Prouve

Jean Prouvé (8 April 1901 – 23 March 1984) completed his training as a metal artisan before opening his own workshop in Nancy in 1924. In the following years he created numerous furniture designs, and in 1947 Prouvé established his own factory. Due to disagreements with the majority shareholders, he left the company in 1953. During the ensuing decades, Prouvé served as a consulting engineer on a number of important architectural projects in Paris.

Architecture

He left his mark on architectural history again in 1971, when he played a major role in selecting the design of Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers for the Centre Pompidou as chairman of the competition jury. Prouvé’s work encompasses a wide range of objects, from a letter opener to door and window fittings. From lighting and furniture to façade elements and prefabricated houses, from modular building systems to large exhibition structures – essentially, almost anything that is suited to industrial production methods.

Jean Prouvé and Vitra

Vitra regards Prouvé as one of the twentieth century’s great designer-engineers, alongside such figures as Charles and Ray Eames. His furniture comprises an important part of the collection of the Vitra Design Museum, which mounted a major retrospective of his work in 2006. Since 2002, Vitra has produced Jean Prouvé’s most significant furniture designs in close cooperation with his daughter, Catherine Prouvé. These products are based on the extensive Prouvé collection in the Vitra Design Museum, as well as plans and drawings in the holdings of the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Fonds Jean Prouvé des Archives Départementales de Meurthe-et-Moselle.

The Standard Chair

The French designer, architect and engineer Jean Prouvé created the Standard Chair in 1934. This design exemplifies a fundamental aspect of Prouvé’s numerous furniture designs and architectural works: his unwavering focus on structural requirements.

The load on the back legs of a chair, where it supports the weight of the sitter’s upper body, is greater than on the front legs. This is hardly a surprising discovery, but no other seating design demonstrates this principle as clearly as the Standard Chair: while tubular steel suffices for the front legs, which bear a relatively light load, the back legs are made of voluminous hollow sections that transfer the primary stress to the floor. The profile of the back legs, formed from thin bent sheet steel, resembles an aircraft wing, with the widest measurement at the point where the leg meets the seat frame – that is, where the stress is greatest. The tapered shape of the hollow section from the seat surface upwards simultaneously defines the angle and position of the backrest.

Two Tier Plant Box

Growing vegetables isn’t just for those with large outdoor spaces! Many species are easily grown in a pot on your balcony or in a light-filled kitchen. With the Plant Box Two-Tier, you have room to plant a selection of edible greenery, as well as some extra space below to store your planting tools or kitchen utensils. We love a mixture of berries, Curly and Tuscan Kale as well as herbs like Oregano and Rosemary, which taste great on the dinner plate and are deliciously fragrant. Plant them as seeds, or take a shortcut by purchasing them as small plants at the garden centre so that you can enjoy them straight away.

Sustainable Design

Sustainable Design

Sustainability is a growing concern in the design world. This has been reflected in a more careful choice of materials, where brands are looking at the use of recyclable materials but also at production methods that are socially fair.
This comes at a time where consumers place more importance on the making of the pieces they buy, on their origin, and on the materials and techniques sourced to do.

Way Series by Ferm Living

By upcycling used plastic bottles, the Way series presents an incredibly durable line of sustainable designs that can be used outside.

The woven recycled polyester gives the items a lovely texture in colours associated with the maritime motif. The pieces have a classic look with a twist created by the asymmetry of the fringes along the sides.

Paper Pulp Boxes by Ferm Living

Made from raw paper pulp, this lidded box gives you a handy, lightweight and stackable sustainable storage solution. The durable boxes help you sort out your closet, store your shoes, or keeps bricks and toys in the kids’ room tidy.

Desert Chair

The Desert Chair is made from recycled polyester made from plastic bottles.
A modernist chair with a graceful profile, Desert Chair is crafted from a tubular powder-coated steel frame in colours black or Cashmere, holding an interchangeable woven textile seat made from recycled plastic bottles, available in four designs: Soil, Stripes, Shapes or Solid Cashmere. Suitable for use both indoors and out, the lounge design invites relaxation. Just sit back and enjoy.

Pile Bathroom Mat

Woven from a rich mix of cotton yarns and recycled polyester, this series of mats presents tufted loops, forming an irresistible texture and an oasis for your feet on cold bathroom floors. With contemporary colour blocking in more colourways, the mat has a classic and straightforward expression. Using recycled polyester, you get a mat produced with consideration to our planet and a very durable textile, which will last a long time.

Pappelina Rugs

Can a plastic rug be sustainable?

PVC is made from natural resources such as salt, oil and ethylene and, thanks to its composition, is 100% recyclable as it can easily be melted down and reused.

PVC has an extremely long lifespan. A Pappelina rug lasts for many years as long as our recommended care instructions are followed. This is an important environmental aspect, our carpets are not a wear and tear product that end up being thrown away into the natural environment. When you buy a rug from Pappelina, it comes with a  3-year warranty.

Ferm Living SS20 New Collection
New In

Low Living

Ferm LIVING wants to create products that help you to build a home that is authentically and comfortably you. A home that encompasses all the delights and contradictions of living in a modern world. As that world becomes busier and louder, we’ve found ourselves looking increasingly inwards – for calm, focus and our true sense of home. What we’ve found is a renewed connection to the earth, to that which grounds us. Consequently, many of Ferm’s new designs bring you closer to the ground. This is what we call ‘low living’ – shorter heights that invite you to lean back, rest and connect to your surroundings on a new and deeper level.

Catena Sofa

The embracing, bean-bag inspired shape of our low-slung Catena sofa is generously dimensioned for all-out relaxation and coziness. The name Catena is inspired by the catenary curve, a u-like shape that a chain or cable adopts when supported only by its ends, and which is mirrored in the soft curves and top-stitched seams of the Catena sofa.

Shay Collection

Perfectly balancing the classic and trends, the familiar and something new, the Shay series of patchwork textiles presents beautiful quilted blankets with an artful use of collages and colour blocking.

Kona Collection

Inspired by traditional Japanese furniture and ‘low living’, the Kona Bed is ideal for use as a daybed or single bed for overnight guests. With a name derived from the Japanese word for corner, the bed is made from sturdy oak veneer and features a low headboard and raised back panel perfect for resting up against. Made to complement the Kona Bed, the Kona Side Table in oak veneer peeks out from under the bed frame to provide a practical platform for a book, a lamp and a glass of water.

Desert Chair
Suitable for both indoors and out, the lounge design invites relaxation. Just sit back and enjoy.

Way Collection

Products are woven out of recycled plastic bottles.
Seat, rugs, cushions, and mats made from plastic may not initially sound like you get textiles with a soft, lovely touch and feel. But both the Desert Chair and Way collection won’t leave you longing for virgin wool. Not only is it practical, easily cleaned and suitable for outdoor use, it also feels just as lovely as any other rug that comes your way.

True Rolling Mat and Cushion

A comfortable ground cover for days in the park or impromptu movie nights under the stars, yarn-dyed cotton-linen roll-up mattress is a versatile design for both indoor and outdoor living.
